Reading the Market

Learn to read the charts and market indexes so you can time expansion, holding and shutdown decisions.

Step 1 of 5 · Network Charts: Hashrate, Difficulty & Block Time · beginner

Hashrate Leads, Difficulty Follows

Why this step: Start with the network: hashrate and difficulty set the competition.

Scenario

Why does difficulty jump in steps while hashrate moves daily?

Open Chart

Opens in a new tab so you can follow the steps side by side.

Do this

  1. 1Open Hashrate vs Difficulty and switch to a 1-year range.
  2. 2Find a period where hashrate rose sharply and note when difficulty caught up.
  3. 3Open Difficulty Adjustment and note the largest positive and negative adjustments of the past year.
  4. 4Check the Difficulty Change gauges on /indexes (1D/7D/30D/90D).
What you should find (open after trying)

Difficulty adjusts every 2,016 blocks (~2 weeks), so it lags hashrate. Between adjustments, a hashrate surge means blocks come faster and revenue per TH briefly holds up before difficulty resets it lower.
